Description:

Our old barge MS Heimatland is located on the river Spree, right in the centre of Berlin (DE), yet in a slightly "secret" area next to a lush park, at the historical harbour of Mitte-Berlin.
The barge is the current location of Hošek Contemporary art gallery and art residency, which we established in 2016. The focus of the gallery is primarily on performing arts, site-specific installations and experimental sound works.

Both the exhibition and performance spaces on MS Heimatland can be rented for art or business events. We also have a range of opportunities for weddings, BBQs, concerts, art openings, film screenings, stage performances, theatre productions or film and photo shoots. With a direct view on the iconic TV tower, the Old City Hall and the tower of Humboldt Forum, the barge has kept its authentic features inside and outside. The original wooden floorboards, uneven and creaky, and rusty steel walls are some of the unique features of the exhibition space.

History of MS Heimatland:
Built in 1910 in Fürstenberg an der Oder, the barge was initially operating under the name Ida and used for transporting coal to Charlottenburg. After the Second World War, the 58-meter long cargo ship was renamed Heimatland, meaning “homeland”. Until the 90s, the ship was moving other boats, sand and chippings. It served for a cultural purpose for the first time in 2002, when German sculptor Christiane Möbus chose it for her project. In March 2018, MS Heimatland became the main exhibition space and artist residency of Hošek Contemporary.
